Description of GASPA Summer Camp Program 2011
General Information

Each group is carefully tailored taking into account the age and German experience each student brings with him or her, so that no one feels intimidated or out of place. Even after classes have started changes can be made to make sure everyone will have a good experience.
Students will be engaged through fun projects and experiments, arts and crafts, reading and creating stories, designing board games and tee-shirts, all while learning to read, write, speak, and understand German. Dependent upon the student's age and proficiency level, projects are expanded to include appropriate literature; results are documented for example in book form, etc.
4-Week Program
June 20th to July 15th - Ages 3 to 10 - 9am to 1 pm
We will talk, sing, read, tell stories, create, modify, play, fabricate and rearrange in German.
There will be frolicking, building, splashing and games.
We will find out where Chemistry and Physics can be found in experiments as well as in everyday life and how nails and screws can hold a new world together.
We will change our surroundings, the outside will be become the inside and we will only be inside if we choose to be.
We will find out how the world looks outside of camp. We will go on field trips or people will come and visit us.
Those who don't know any German yet will receive help and support from those who already do.
Kindergarten
12-15 students between the ages of 3 and 5, together with at least one kindergarten teacher and one
or two assistants create a group. Together they will design and decorate their classroom, organize their
time and follow their creative and learning wishes inside and outside the classroom.
With the help of everyday activities such as cooking, experimenting, or studying, German is practiced, spoken, sung, understood and learned. During the morning circle, plans for the day are discussed and new songs, words and stories are presented and practiced.
And let us not forget that it is summer, the sky is blue, the sun is warm, water is lovely to play with, and that sand, trees, and bare feet are all a part of summer!
School Age Groups
Students between the ages of 6 and 10 are placed into multiple groups, with a maximum of 15 students
per group. Each group has at least one teacher and one assistant.
According to their abilities and language proficiency, depending on the child's skill level, he or she will read, measure, calculate, dance, cook, celebrate, make music, write, translate, invent, and fantasize in an appropriate group for him/her. Things can be created, modified, created anew, kept, or discarded.
Thematic groups can be created to make the above possible or you can simply jump right in and get started. And of course there is time to sit in the corner, watch, or simply do something by yourself.
The children will document what happens in the groups during this time in many different ways and methods, such as writing instructions for a game, drawing pictures, or creating collages.
Afternoon Program
June 20th to July 15th - Ages 3 to 10 - 1pm to 6pm
The afternoon program is an extension of the morning program for those students, who are not picked
up at the end of the regular morning program.
Children can be signed up for specific days and times which can vary. Sign-up for this program occurs upon arrival, in the morning on the first day of the 4-Week program.
The afternoon program is lead by qualified teachers, who are supported by assistants. Regardless if inside or outside, the children are always supervised by team members. The size of the afternoon teams will depend on the number of students signed-up.
The afternoon program is divided into multiple sections. There is a snack time and sometimes there will be cooking. There is a story time as well as a reading/quiet time for those children wanting to rest. Various craft projects are offered both indoors and outdoors. Children can choose if they wish to participate in these projects. Everyday different board games and group games are prepared and offered. Water and sand games are always accessible. Additionally, it is ensured that children can find space to rest, work alone, and play inside or out.

German and Sports - Sports in German
June 27th to July 1st - Ages 8 to 13 - 9am to 1pm
You're interested in moving and sports, in particular soccer, skateboarding, and sailing? During this
week you will not only participate in these sports, but learn more about the history of these sports, read
about them, perhaps see a video clip and chat with experts. Of course, here and there, there will be
something which needs to be written down or photographed.
Another important item to be talked about are the required safety procedures which need to be understood before we can get started.
The course of action for the week will be presented on the first day.
Together with experienced soccer coaches, skateboard enthusiasts, and experienced sailors you will plan your week and dive right in ... in German of course!
Soccer – in German
June 27th to July 1st - Ages 14 to 18 - 9am to 1pm
Soccer, I mean Fußball, is your thing? Then we have just the thing for you! For one week be totally surrounded by Fußball ... in German of course! This year, for the first time, we are not only offering Fußball, but Fußball with two qualified sports trainers from Germany who are coming just for us. In addition to that, a player from the National Soccer League has agreed to be part of the week. You don't find a great combination like this every day and we are just as excited as you are to get started.
This program is for students between the ages of 14 and 18. It is a serious program during which you will play a lot of Fußball, talk about rules and tactics. The Fußballcamp language will be German. Did I mention that there will be the opportunity of fun, too? Who already knows the word "Tor" or "abseits"? This and many more German words will become part of your everyday conversations and vocabulary during this exciting week.
At the end of the week, there will be a Fußball test. If and when passed, students will receive a certificate of completion.
Montara Lighthouse
August 15th to August 19th - Ages 13 to 16(*) - overnight trip
((*)2 years prior German knowledge required)
Two teachers, one assistant, the Montara Lighthouse, the ocean, tide pools ... everything you need is
here.
5 days and 4 nights are yours to create and turn into your perfect adventure!
How should all this work? That is up to you and your fellow adventurers.
Plan of the day? Why not a plan for the night? Food ... we will prepare it ourselves. In this case we will need to plan our trip together. Activities? Ideas will be collected, sorted, accepted, or discarded. Music? Yes, but only mine. What will we need? A supply list will need to be prepared ...
For this program there will be at least one preparatory meeting, where the participants will get to know
one another, set up a meal plan and discuss what it is they should and would like to do. We will discuss
what can and needs to be brought along as well as what needs to stay home!
Who knows how to play a board game, or an instrument, dye a shirt, decorate shoes or simply relax in
the sand? If all this is done in German, then we are all set!
And there is so much more ...
Once the registration period is closed, then all the participants will receive an email letting you know when the preparatory meeting will take place.
In addition, you will receive an email letting you know what you should bring, what you may bring along, what you MAY NOT bring along, and how we are going to get to the lighthouse.
Family Weekend
August 19th to August 21st - all ages with parents present - overnight trip
For the first time this year we are offering a family weekend in German open to all families (GASPA
families take precedence). We will be staying at the Montara Lighthouse, cooking for ourselves, eating
together, reading and singing. Anyone with ideas to contribute is welcome to share!
There will be a rough plan for each day. Some activities are tailored for the whole group and others for
fewer people. Some activities will be offered in parallel and everyone is able to pick and choose what it
is they want to do. Among us are surely those who know games, songs, and perhaps even a ghost story
to read around the camp fire and much, much more!
